Should i use rtv with cork gasket
Shran Junk Collector Forum Moderator. Supporting Member. V8 Engine Swap. Solid Axle Swap. Not a fan of cork gaskets at all. My trick with gaskets is to smear just a little dab of grease on both sides so that it sticks to whatever you're applying it to Shran said:. TRS Event Participant. I don't believe I've used anything on the trans pan I do however always check the pan bolt holes for flatness.
I typically straighten the bolt holes with two ball pein hammers on the edge of my workbench. Dirtman said:. Think some grease wont do the opposite? There might be a tiny, tiny bit that gets squished out and mixed with the trans fluid but not enough to matter. High tack does do the same thing but then you gotta have it on hand when you're doing the gasket job I probably have a can of it somewhere, maybe, but I KNOW there's a few tubs of grease in the shop at all times, just happens to be what I use since it's handy and works well.
Of course when in doubt, go with what you already had as long as it operated smoothly for quite a long time. Post by tara » Thu Feb 21, pm Hi, i have just finished to install a cork oil pan gasket on my using red RTV and it leaks again!!!
Re: tips for installing a cork oil pan gasket on my ? No obnoxious leaks When I have done cork, I use permatex 2. You should not need to use any RTV anywhere between the gasket and the engine block unless where the 2 case halves meet there is a step.
You may want to use some blue thread locker on the bolt threads, not RTV. Install it to the factory specs of 3. Since many torque wrenches do not go that low accurately, you may want to use a inch pound wrench set to 43 in. Do not use RTV, Vaseline or anything else on the gasket, it will cause the gasket to slip, extrude or split during the torque up.
Thanks for choosing Fel-Pro! I have been on the receiving end of RTVed pans and swore I would never do that to another human being :- My grandfather was a top notch mechanic from the mid s to and owned his own garage. He taught me to simply smear regular wheel bearing grease on both sides of the cork gasket, set it in place on the pan and put the pan in place and put your bolts in snugging the bolts gradually, evenly, and alternating tighting bolts across from each other.
The wheel bearing grease keeps the gasket in place, helps seal the cork, and is simple to remove the next time. I had a leaky pan on my Corvair and reworked it this way after removing old RTV and making sure the pan was flat and it does not have a hint of any leaks.
That said a pan that is warped my require a more aggressive solution like RTV. Just another option. Posted by: kustom. Wheel bearing grease always worked for me. I did mine in the spring and have no leaks at all. Posted by: 66vairman. I use longer bolts, washers, and lock washers with a thick cork or rubber gasket, and sparingly applied RTV. Actually the pan and stock bolts were designed for a thin paper gasket and the in.
A lower torque rating and you risk the bolts coming loose - so that's why I use longer bolts with the washers. You may be thinking the paper gasket should be used, yes if the oil pan was straight, but now few are so the thicker gasket works to correct for variations. A good solution is an aluminum oil pan with paper gasket and a sealer like Gasket Cinch, or Permatex Hi-Tack. There are issues there also with casting flatness. Some are so deep they end up getting scrapped up, especially going up driveway ramps.
Posted by: Vairismo. I've seen his pan bolts. They currently have thin internal tooth lock washers. Posted by: ken. Posted by: corventure Dave. Late model pan bolts have captured washers on them already. I also do just like Ken posted. Have to be darn sure all the oil residue is off sealing surfaces.
